Caring for the places where we work

mel Group is based close to the River Thames. Many of our colleagues and their families live locally, so protecting the river, its surroundings and the wider environment matters to us personally. We want the places where we live and work to be cared for now and for future generations.

Our vehicle fleet is one area where we are making a practical change. Around half of our approximately 30 vehicles are now electric. Because our teams travel regularly between buildings and sites, this transition reduces exhaust emissions from those vehicles in the places where we work. We intend to continue replacing vehicles with suitable electric models as our fleet develops.

mel Group - Environment

We hold the relevant waste carrier licences and take responsibility for how waste from our work is handled and removed from site. We also look for opportunities to use materials carefully and avoid unnecessary waste when planning and delivering projects.

Our work can help clients improve the performance of their own buildings. LED lighting and controls, planned maintenance, mechanical system improvements and considered equipment replacement are among the ways we can support more efficient operation. The right solution depends on each building, its condition and how it is used.

We are currently working towards the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. This is part of strengthening how we manage, measure and improve our environmental practices across the business.

People

Looking after our team

mel Group was built on the belief that good service starts with people who feel supported, valued and able to do their best work. Be kind remains a guiding principle in how we treat colleagues, clients, supply chain partners and the communities around us.

We recognise the pressures that can come with work in construction, engineering and facilities management. Our team includes trained Mental Health Advisors who colleagues can approach for support and a listening ear. We also hold mental health and wellbeing training days with Anna Bennett, a former Great Britain hockey player, who draws on her experience in elite sport to share practical approaches to resilience and wellbeing.

Looking after people also means building strong relationships across the business. Training days, sporting events, charity challenges and family gatherings help our colleagues connect beyond their daily roles. Our tenth anniversary celebration brought employees and their families together to recognise what the team has achieved.

mel Group - Health & Safety

Health & Safety

The safety of our people—our colleagues and friends—comes first. We work to improve it every day, knowing there is always more we can do. Every task is an opportunity to recognise a risk sooner and make the work safer. No job is worth someone getting hurt.

Our red card system

Every mel Group engineer and site-based colleague carries a red card. It gives them the authority to stop work if they feel pressured to proceed or are not completely confident that a situation is safe.

The red card prompts a clear process: Stop. Assess. Focus. Eliminate the risk. Work only resumes when it is safe to do so. If there is any doubt, our team is encouraged to pause and ask for a second opinion.

Our promise to our team

mel Group’s owners and senior management team will always back a colleague who puts safety first, even when stopping work affects a programme or a client request. We want everyone to feel confident speaking up and asking for support. If something does not feel right, stop. We will work through it together.

Opportunity

Investing in future engineers

Apprenticeships have been an important part of mel Group for more than ten years. We currently support seven apprentices, and more than 20 people we have trained have gone on to become qualified engineers.

Our apprentices gain experience alongside skilled colleagues on live projects. They learn technical skills, safe working practices, problem solving and how to communicate professionally with clients. Many of our senior managers and directors began their own careers as apprentices, so we understand the opportunities that a strong start in the industry can create.

We have links with three further education establishments that help young people develop routes into skilled work: Bracknell and Wokingham College, part of Activate Learning, Slough & Langley College and Abingdon & Witney College. Through apprenticeships and training, we aim to support local people while helping develop the engineers our industry will need in the years ahead.

Community

Giving back together

Our clients trust us to work in environments that demand care, clear communication and high standards. We invest in training, follow established safety and quality processes, and work closely with each client to understand the particular needs of their buildings and the people who use them.

We know responsibility is ongoing. We will continue developing our environmental management approach, progressing our fleet transition, supporting our people and creating opportunities for the next generation. As we make progress, we will update this page with clear information about what we have achieved and where we still want to improve.
